If not, we have got you covered! Here is a great opportunity to dramatically UP the Omega-3 content of your eggs while giving your girls a beloved treat, AND doing a solid for a neighborhood community garden at the same time!
St Andrew Community Garden (just up 24th between Central and Broadwater in Billings) has lots of purslane available for the taking! Haul a cache home and keep it in a bag in the shade or inside… it’s good for about a week so you can dole it out to the girls on a daily basis. It will keep in the fridge in a produce bag for several weeks. It also dehydrates very well so you can feed it throughout the year. Remember, it is one of the most nutritious plants on the PLANET… for YOU, or for your hens! Boosts omega-3 acids up to 20x more than hens not fed with it as a supplement to regular laying ration.
And it tastes pretty yummy for people, too! Mild, faintly lemony, a bit “slickery”. It has more omega-3’s than any known plant source. It is widely grown in other countries as a staple leafy green, with many traditional recipes calling for the fairly low-growing hard herb. It is an excellent source of vitamins A and C, some B-complex vitamins like riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine and carotenoids, potent antioxidants, as well as dietary minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese and potassium. Purslane is literally far more nutritious than most of the vegetables we have removed purslane to grow!

URGENT CALL! Magic City Hens 501(c)3 nonprofit has an IMMEDIATE need for an Events Coordinator who can oversee the Magic City Hen Expo 2013! Duties for this paid-with-appreciation person would include contacting vendors for sponsorship, setting up cheap-to-free advertising, and overseeing the rest of the committee who are willing to do smaller jobs like pass out flyers, arrange the kids area, provide muscle, etc.
If we can’t get a Coordinator by July 4, we’re going to have to officially cancel the 2013 Expo, scheduled for Saturday, September 21 from 10AM – 2PM at the St Andrew Presbyterian Church Community Garden.
We also need Expo Committee members, IF we can get an Events Coordinator. Committee members would take smaller jobs as assigned/able.
What is already done? ALOT! Speakers are lined up, the venue is set, a few booths are planned, a children’s area is ready, banners are printed, people know about the Expo.
Please contact TJ at MagicCityHens@hotmail.com ASAP if you or someone you know might be interested in this position!
Please contact TJ at MagicCityHens@hotmail.com if you can take a very friendly, family-approved young RIR rooster. He is just starting to crow and lives within the city limits so he’s gotta go. 😦 The family really loves him so wants him to find a no-kill home. Please email today!
