Events Coordinator Needed ASAP!

URGENT CALL! Magic City Hens 501(c)3 nonprofit has an IMMEDIATE need for an Events Coordinator who can oversee the Magic City Hen Expo 2013! Duties for this paid-with-appreciation person would include contacting vendors for sponsorship, setting up cheap-to-free advertising, and overseeing the rest of the committee who are willing to do smaller jobs like pass out flyers, arrange the kids area, provide muscle, etc.
If we can’t get a Coordinator by July 4, we’re going to have to officially cancel the 2013 Expo, scheduled for Saturday, September 21 from 10AM – 2PM at the St Andrew Presbyterian Church Community Garden.
We also need Expo Committee members, IF we can get an Events Coordinator. Committee members would take smaller jobs as assigned/able.
What is already done? ALOT! Speakers are lined up, the venue is set, a few booths are planned, a children’s area is ready, banners are printed, people know about the Expo.
Please contact TJ at ASAP if you or someone you know might be interested in this position!

This is the advanced track for those looking to go to the next step of sustainably raising their very own poultry. This will be a gathering of training, coaching and networking.

There are very few left in North America who are maintaining breeding flocks of chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys. In this session you will learn the basics of genetics, breeding and a strategy for preserving many breeds that are disappearing quickly.

St Patrick’s Day Parade!

Upcoming! Saturday, March 17, 2012 marks the annual St Patrick’s Day Celebration in downtown Billings. This year, Magic City Hens will be walking and distributing vegetable seeds and micro-green seeds (instead of candy) to help end hunger in the Billings area. It’s a small way to help empower people to grow their own food. Micro-greens are beneficial in that they are super easy, super fast, and can be grown in a sunny windowsill – no tilling needed! 🙂

If you would like to donate to Magic City Hens to help pay for the parade entry fee or seed supplies, please contact TJ at 406-371-5161 or We are a non-profit 501(c)3.

If you would like to walk with us, please likewise contact us right away! Adults and children are welcome. Join the Parade!!

Chickens and the Seeds…

Remember the old tunafish commercial? Here’s our spin…

“Ask any gardener you happen to see… what’s the best garden? Chicken and the seeds!”

Chickens produce a (quite modest) amount of one of the richest sources of compostable material around. This, once composted, is much better than chemical fertilizers to GROW A MIRACLE in your garden! It also composts quickly and easily.

Chickens also eat bugs that eat garden plants. They eat scraps from your garden. They eat scraps from your kitchen. They eat, in fact, durn near everything, little omnivores that they are. You will love this come grasshopper season!

This coming March 17, Magic City Hens will walk in the parade with a few other “locavore” groups and people, and instead of candy, we’ll be passing out micro-gardens in a packet! Wayne and Connie Burleson of New Ways to Feed the World have donated a wide variety of open-pollinated, heirloom seeds to help bless Billings families. These seeds will all work in very small gardens, even container gardens.

Contact us at for more information on how you can walk with us! Gardeners, locavores, hen supporters, friendly people, and of course, children are all welcome!!

Chickens 101 Class!

This coming Saturday 2/25/12 from 1:30-3:30PM at Good Earth Market downtown, enjoy and learn at CHICKENS 101!! 2 hours of information for only $15. Learn breed selection, care, feeding, seasonal issues, and lots more about these fun and productive birds! Older children are welcome with a parent. Contact TJ at for more information or to sign up!!

Irish Chicken

Actually, in this context, “Irish Chicken” is not related to a non-corned-beef St Patrick’s Day traditional meal… but it is related to poultry. Sort of.

JOIN US! Saturday, March 17, 2012 is the annual St Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Billings. Magic City Hens will be a walking unit in the parade, passing out treats and good cheer! We will have costumes with a minimal financial involvement 🙂 and some fun, funky chicken music… how fun is that?!

Bring the kids if you’d like, and come on down! Contact TJ at for more information…

And since we tantalized you, here’s an interesting-sounding recipe for “Irish Stout Chicken”:
