Hen Homing & Rooster Relocation

Magic City Hens maintains an active listing of individuals and families in Yellowstone county and surrounding areas who are able to take abandoned or unwanted chickens. This includes chicks, roosters, hens, and aged hens past egg-laying years (they may continue to lay in backyard conditions until they are 8 years old, but possibly live to age 12).

For more information, either to sign up as a “foster home” or to donate chickens to the program, please email HensInTheBackyard@hotmail.com.

There is no charge for the service on either side. We simply want to be as responsible as possible with the urban hen issue in Billings, and feel that it is important to give people options when they are no longer able or willing to maintain their pet chickens.

We have already placed chickens with this program and expect to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

UPDATE: 1/17/12 Magic City Hens has re-homed over 4 dozen chickens (roosters, hens, pullets) to date! Our “available homes” list is growing. Contact us if you’d like your name added to the list, or have chickens to relocate!

  1. June 11, 2013: I have what I thought was a pullet but is actually a rooster. It’s a pretty white Orpington who has just started to crow. I live within the city, so I can’t keep him. Would someone like this rooster? I will deliver him to you. swl1948@msn.com

  2. I am looking for some laying hens to replace some laying hens that passed away. we do not kill or eat our chickens they live in a coup and free range around our 2 acres ….. if you could help me out that would be wonderful I’m from Buffalo Wyoming but my parents live in Columbus and I am up there very frequently.
